November: Learn: Gratitude

In Luke: 17:12-19 we find the story of the ten lepers who were healed by Jesus.  It reads:

“And as he [Christ] entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off.  And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?  There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”

All ten of these men had been healed of a disease that was considered so loathsome that those afflicted were not permitted to live in their homes and cities.  They were cast out, and were not permitted to come unto Jesus.  As they lifted their voices calling out to him, His heart must have been touched.  And then, after healing all ten of them only one returned to give thanks.

Former Relief Society General President, Bonnie D. Parkin made these statements about gratitude:

"Gratitude requires awareness and effort not only to feel it but to express it."

"Gratitude is a spirit filled principle."

"Gratitude inspires happiness and carries divine influence."

"Gratitude is our sweet acknowledgment of the Lord's hand in our lives."

The scriptures teach us to "live in thanksgiving daily," and "He who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious."
