February: Follow: Charity

For our activity this month we had the opportunity to experience "charity in action" as we served at a local care center for handicapped adults.  We were able to follow directly in the footsteps of our Savior who “went about doing good,” teaching the gospel and showing tender compassion for the poor, afflicted, and distressed.  Charity isn't just something we feel, it's something we do.

Here are some pictures of our activity.  We were able to read books to the residents, help them make an Easter craft, and paint the women's fingernails.

Here are a some thoughts from a few sisters who participated:

"At first, I didn't know what to say to any of our brothers whom we served last night. But after one smile, it became easy to talk to them. As it goes with the miracle of service, it only took seconds, to focus on their needs and happiness and not think of myself."

"It was a honor to associate with the people of the care center. They all had such sweet smiles, which in turn made me smile the rest of the night."

"One of my favorite quotes by Gordon B. Hinckley is, 'In all of living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.' The sweet sisters at the care center exemplified this with their smiles and excitement about the little things! What an example they were for me!"

As members of Relief Society, Joseph Smith said that we are "now placed in a situation in which [we] can act according to those sympathies which God has planted in [us]."

We don't need to look far for opportunities to develop charity in our lives.  President Monson said, "There is a serious need for the charity that gives attention to those who are unnoticed, hope to those who are discouraged, aid to those who are afflicted.  True charity is love in action.  The need for charity is everywhere. 'Charity never faileth.'  May this long enduring Relief Society motto, this timeless truth, guide you in everything you do.  May it permeate your very souls and find expression in all your thoughts and actions."
